Against the Baroque. A World in Extinction

Throughout the 18th century, the Bishopric of Solsona witnessed one of the peak moments of baroque sculpture in Catalonia. The vitality of the workshops and the skill of some master craftsmen filled the bishopric with works of extraordinary quality and creativity. This entire movement was shaken by the postulates of the Real Academia de San Fernando, which proposed putting an end to baroque aesthetics and executed this through royal orders and decrees. Against those norms, applied with insistence and efficiency through the bishops, the workshops could do very little. Few survived, and those who managed to pull through did so by renovating themselves. The exhibition aims to show the vitality of that baroque world that was pushed toward an aesthetic reformulation in a classicist key, noting, however, that there were also small pockets of resistance and continuity.

The exhibition is curated by Francesc Miralpeix and Joan Bosch. The design and museographic assembly are handled by Salvador Vinyes.

The exhibition can be visited from May 13 until Sunday, September 17, 2023.

During spring and summer, different visits to churches related to the exhibition’s theme will be programmed, led by scholars of this period.
