Romanesque

Chalice and paten

  • Pewter
  • Chalice: 11.5 x 9.1 cm Ø
  • Paten: 9.7 cm Ø
  •  12th century
  • Origin: church of Sant Salvador de la Vedella, Cercs (El Berguedà)

MDCS 579 and 580

The cup of the chalice is bell-shaped and attached to its conical base by a flared knot. It has multiple inscriptions engraved on it. It is possible to read: Hanl, ET, Yan, albeit with some difficulty.

The paten, which appears not to have been made with a mould, is embellished with engravings. It features the host with a large cross drawn in the centre and bears the inscription: DOMINO.

This chalice and paten were found at the cemetery of Sant Salvador de la Vedella. The evidence suggests that these were grave goods rather than liturgical objects for use in Eucharistic celebrations.
