The face of Jesus on his way to Mount Calvary to be crucified was printed on a piece of cloth offered to him by Veronica, a pious woman of Palestine. This tradition gave rise to the use of the term vera icona to refer to these paintings depicting the face of Jesus. By extension and for ornamental convenience, among other reasons, the face of Mary was added. The basis of this painting is a sculptural element made of gilded wood, with angel heads and filigree that would easily integrate in an altarpiece.
